Pilates by Tammie is just that

Tammie Joseph has taught Pilates for more than three years and is now offering hands-on teaching at her own studio, Pilates by Tammie.

Pilates by Tammie opened July 1 behind Crab House along Route 1. Joseph teaches private sessions and group classes of up to six students. Participants spend the entire 55-minute class on reformers, working all parts of the body by stretching, and performing exercises like planks and lunges.

“It’s a really safe way to move your entire body, and I think people are just catching on to how awesome it is,” Joseph said.

Joseph teaches contemporary Pilates, which combines a handful of the 26 classic Pilates exercises with her personal spin on the century-old practice. She teaches out of a boutique studio, a small space that focuses on only one or two types of workouts. In a small studio, it’s easy to work around the room and ensure each student is exercising with correct form, Joseph said.

Joseph offers Reformer Flow, Power, Align and Sculpt, ranging in difficulty and technique. She hosts morning classes beginning at 7:30 a.m., and afternoon and evening classes beginning at 4:30 p.m. In between the two sessions, Joseph teaches individual classes and makes time to work out herself on one of the six reformers. She plans to install Cadillac and Tower equipment in the future to vary the way her students exercise.

The Cape graduate was first introduced to Pilates seven years ago when her best friend earned her certification in Washington, D.C. She tried to convince Joseph to try it, but Joseph thought Pilates workouts were unexciting and made for an older crowd.

Joseph had been riding and training horses for 15 years and more recently became passionate about CrossFit until she developed knee issues. Her knee surgeon recommended Pilates, which Joseph reluctantly decided to give a shot. She trained at a local studio and began doing Pilates three to four days a week. Not long after, Joseph completed her certification during COVID-19 in the reformer, chair, trapeze and mat by Balanced Body.

“I went through the rehab, I’ve had a couple of knee surgeries, and now I just do Pilates and that’s all I do,” Joseph said. “I’ve never felt stronger, ever.”

Joseph taught six days a week at Right Balance Pilates on the Rehoboth Boardwalk. One of her clients was moving out of her office space and offered the building to Joseph, which fulfilled her desire to reach a larger audience and teach more often this summer.

Now, with her own studio, Joseph most enjoys watching her clients increase their balance, strength and confidence. She also recommends Pilates to young athletes, since the exercises are a great complement to sports and other regular fitness programs.

“It is just such a total body experience,” Joseph said. “I just love it.”
