Because of my work schedule (I wake up at 3:55 a.m. three days a week, and I coach until 7 p.m. five days a week), sleep is something I don’t get a lot of. I’m very aware how important sleep is for body recovery, cognition, and energy, so I’ve been trying to make it a priority in my life.

To track my sleep, I invested in an Oura ring. I chose the ring because it’s comfortable to sleep in—I don’t even realize I’m wearing it.

Not only does the Oura ring track my sleep but it also tracks heart rate variability (HRV), body temperature, readiness, stress, activity, and provides period prediction, to name a few things.

Thanks to all these measurable metrics, I’m able to see how well-rested I am and know how I should go about my day. If the ring tells me my readiness is low based on my numbers, I adjust my workout for the day to something my body can handle so I don’t overtrain.

“Readiness is your main Oura score and is designed for you and only you, helping you discover what works for your body and lifestyle,” according to the Oura Ring’s website. “Readiness is a holistic picture of your health—taking into account your recent activity, sleep patterns, and direct body signals (like resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and body temperature) that can signify if your body is under strain.”

It can be difficult for me to listen to my body, but when I see the data right in front of me, it’s hard to refute what it’s telling me.
